As a freelancer, I have been fortunate to work on a wide variety of projects, ranging from video editing to graphic and print design, to logo design and branding. I enjoy being able to deliver work across the spectrum of my skills and disciplines. This challenges me to always improve my craft, and build deeper technical abilities.
Working with both local and international clients, I have worked on a wide variety of projects in different industries, from finance to healthcare. My clients rely on me to bring creativity to the table, daring them to tell their brand's story in novel and exciting ways.
As the in-house multimedia designer, I created and managed all CLEVVA’s marketing content, ensuring that their product was showcased clearly and effectively. Leading their Digital Media department, I oversaw the creation and sharing of media assets across a variety of media, such as video, print, and digital. This strengthened my communication and project management skills greatly.
My particular focus was motion design, and used extensively in the development of explainer videos for clients and industry. Writing and editing the scripts, I also performed the voice-over work on the majority of the video content. I learned many valuable skills such as copywriting, proofreading, logo design, and layout design.
As a motion designer, I was involved in content production, creating videos and sales collateral. This included video editing, print layout, and even some 3D work. I also offered media support across various teams and departments, teaching me valuable lessons about working as part of a larger team.
My first time freelancing, I was able to work on a variety of projects. I worked particularly in motion graphics and animation, as well as the creation of 3D models and mock-ups for marketing purposes. I also provided some voice-over work to my clients, which paved the way for future voice-over work.
I worked on a variety of projects ranging from full 2D animation to 3D modelling. Covering fields such as product rendering and branding, they extended both my design and technical skillset.
I worked as a videographer, editor, and animator, and built experience in the use of professional video cameras and related equipment. As a jack-of-all-trades in the office, I worked across and between tools such as Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, developing both video editing, animation, and VFX work. Out of the office, I worked both on location and on set with a variety of high-profile clients, both South African and international, such as Yardley, American Swiss, and First Ascent.
I learned invaluable communication skills, working with both talent and clients across a variety of situations. I was also involved in the pre-production phases of planning shoots, contacting talent and equipment hires, and building specialized tools for some projects.
As part of my studies I had the opportunity to intern at Skript.TV, a video production company in Cape Town. I joined their team in the shooting of a video campaign for the sports apparel company, First Ascent. I operated the secondary, B-cam, and provided assistance in the process as a grip. As part of an intense two weeks, I also filmed and edited a video ad for KWV, a large distillery.
As a life-long learner, I count every degree, certificate, course or deep-dive as a way to improve myself, my skills, and my work. Through a wide-variety of education, I view myself as a well-rounded multimedia generalist, able to offer both broad and niche skills to my clients.
I followed Cullen Kelly for a while, learning colour grading footage within DaVinci Resolve. When the next round of slots opened up for his course, I jumped at the chance to join. An intense four sessions covered the theory and concepts from the ground up. I learned about how to shape a digital image to create both a pleasing image, and one that tells a story. This knowledge has been surprisingly applicable to other areas on my design work.
I use both JavaScript in web applications and Adobe After Effects' JavaScript-based Expression language to create complex and dynamic animations through coded scripts. On both web and animation fronts, I realised that my knowledge of programming wasn't sufficient for the work that I wanted to do.
I enrolled in this several month's-long course—the exact introduction course offered at MIT for their first-year Computer Science students—to help bridge this gap. It was an unimaginably interesting and rewarding course, teaching both low-level concepts and more complex structures through applied assignments. It has allowed to not only enhance my current software skills, but also explore more complex programming such as C++ in Unreal Engine.
Through my studies, I became compelled by the concepts of accessible design, and how it leads to more sustainable design practices. This course helped me to couple that interest with theory and execution, through practical assignments that mimicked real-life scenarios. I learned about the process of gathering information about your users, incorporating the client's needs, and managing project stakeholders. This course redefined and enhanced the way that I design, reaching across many disciplines.
This week-long workshop was offered as part of my studies, and taught a deeper understanding of integrated approaches to tackling complex global issues. We learned how to apply critical and strategic thinking to sustainability challenges, and make a positive impact to the world through our design practice.
Creation and understanding of modern media. Areas included animation, UI/UX design, web design, application design, and motion graphics. I had the honour of directing of our student short film, as well as being involved in the writing and editing process. As a member of the student council, I created videos, GIF's, and other media to engage my fellow students.
I had a particular interest in Visual Studies, which covered the history and ethics of design and art, and allowed me to apply my skills of language, research, and writing. I also received a minor in Marketing and Photography, which have been applied to my design practice in countless ways.
